It only takes $3.99 and 5 seconds to improve your cell phone camera!
Being a tech savvy guy I regularly listen to the TWiT (this week in tech) podcast. A few episodes ago the host Leo Laporte told the audience about HDR camera. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The process involves taking several shots of the same image with adjustments to the setting of the cameral being made between shots. This series of images are then aligned and merged and calibrated according to a predefined set of algorithms either in the device or by using software on a separate computer. The HDR technique allows you to capture details in bright and dark areas and have them merged into a single photo. The results vary but after using HDR Camera on my Droid X for the last few days I have to say that I’m very impressed with the results. Almalence is the company that produces the software for Android devices as well as the iPhone. Do a search for HDR Camera on your respective market to find the app.
And now the test images: Both these photos were taken on October 10th at 5:20 AM with my Droid X. The first image is with the normal camera.

This image below was taken using the HDR Camera app.
The drawback to HDR Camera is that 3 to 4 pictures are taken in rapid succession and then processes using the before mentioned algorithms and finally saved. The whole process takes about 6 seconds. You do need to hold the camera steady as the images are being taken but the algorithms help in this regard also by reducing the shaking hand jitter to some extent. The 6 seconds may be less or more depending on your device.
What is amazing to me about the images is that you can zoom up on them without much loss of detail compared to the standard image.
